Tracking progression: addition and multiplication facts

Image of the Multiplication TableThe two tables I’ve included with this post are derived from a trick I stole from the Hunter College Learning Lab. The purpose of the tables – as banal as they may appear – is to track student progress. Each time the student masters a set of facts, that row or column gets colored in. The idea is that the table looks relatively intimidating at first. But, as the student masters 1 x 10, she also masters 10 x 1. As a result, she can color in the first row as well as the first column. This method of tracking student progress allows the student develop a sense of pride in her accomplishments.

Originally, I was handed a master copy of the multiplication table at a learning lab seminar. I retyped it in word, because I felt that it could be adapted to other situations – such as addition.
